The

Next Step to

Better _____

Hello!

We hope you are all enjoying the longer evenings as we head into summer.  In this week's edition of Next Step to Better, we're kicking off with a common yet often unspoken issue: avoidance. The metaphorical elephant in the room - everyone knows it's there, but no one wants to acknowledge it. This might be the difficult conversations we avoid, the glaring issues we sidestep, and the challenges we pretend don't exist.

As humans, we're prone to avoiding discomfort, whether it's in the form of tough conversations or confronting the problems at hand. This natural instinct is rooted in our desire for harmony and a fear of conflict. But, as you know, avoidance can lead to unresolved issues festering beneath the surface, ultimately affecting the overall effectiveness of our teams and organisations.

So, what can leaders like you do about this?

  1. Recognise and name the "elephants" when they appear
  2. Foster a culture of open communication and trust
  3. Tackle difficult conversations head-on with confidence
  4. Address and resolve issues before they escalate

By embracing these practices, you'll not only strengthen your leadership skills but also enable your team and organisation to thrive in the face of challenges. So, let's dive in and start addressing the elephants in the room, one at a time.

As you read through this week's Next Step to Better, take some time to reflect on your own experiences with avoidance and the metaphorical elephants in your organisation. Here are three reflection prompts to help you identify and tackle these issues:

1. Unspoken Challenges: Think about a recent situation where you or your team avoided addressing a difficult issue. What was the underlying reason for the avoidance? Was it fear of conflict, discomfort, or something else? How did this avoidance impact the team's performance and overall effectiveness?

2. Openness to Feedback: How do you typically respond to constructive criticism? Are you creating a safe environment for your team members to express their concerns and share their perspectives? Consider ways you can improve your receptiveness to feedback and encourage open communication within your team

3. Proactive Problem-Solving: Identify an "elephant" currently present in your team. What steps can you take to proactively address and resolve this issue? Consider the potential consequences of continued avoidance and the benefits of tackling the problem head-on. How can you involve your team in the problem-solving process and foster a culture of collaboration and trust?

By reflecting on these prompts, you'll gain a deeper understanding of your own tendencies and the dynamics within your organisation. Use these insights to guide your actions as you work towards creating a more open, communicative, and effective team environment
